MADE IN ITALY: POLITI(CIA),GM FOODS DON'T HELP OUR AGRICULTURE(AGI) - Rome, 10 May - GM foods do not help our agriculture, said Giuseppe Politi, national president of the CIA - the Confederation of Italian Farmers - while attending a round table meeting today in Rome as part of the conference promoted by the Council of Genetic Rights on the theme "Corn or grain: put GM to the government test". Politi recalled CIA's task of "focussing its action on the foundations that we cannot give up: quality production, that is a differentiated offer, with a high content of traditions and service, food safety and precaution principles, that is respect of the rules and of principles of public health, information and traceability; certainties for farmers, that is rules for the coexistence and system of checks, because they are made responsible for programming cultivation rules; protector of biodiversity and of the environment, that is recuperation and safeguarding of the traditional varieties that risk, due to difficulties of production and market, disappearing from cultivation organisation, innovation of productive techniques directed, amongst other things, at a more rational use of chemistry, research and diffusion of innovations".
